Police pursuit ends with injuries to suspect

 Lewis Levine

A police pursuit Tuesday morning which ended in a wreck has taken another twist as new details are being released by Liberty County Sheriff William Bowman.

Bowman reported the suspect, who led deputies on a chase on Airport Road in Hinesville, apparently suffered a self-inflicted gunshot to his head.

Bowman said when deputies went to remove the man from the vehicle after the accident, they noticed a large amount of blood on his head even though he was wearing a seatbelt.

When he arrived at Memorial Health University Medical Center in Savannah via emergency medical helicopter it was discovered the man had suffered a gunshot wound. A weapon was later found inside the Honda Pilot he was operating.

Bowman said there was no gunfire exchanged during the chase either by the suspect or deputies.

Bowman notified the Georgia Bureau of Investigation who conducted a quick investigation. Once it was determined the wound was self-inflicted it was turned back over to the Liberty County Sheriff’s Office to investigate.

Bowman said the man is in stable condition.

The entire incident started in Hinesville Tuesday morning around 1 a.m. when a LCSO deputy attempted to make a routine traffic stop for a vehicle without rear taillights.

According to Georgia State Patrol Trooper, Christopher Ashdown the deputy who initiated the traffic stop, called for a canine unit for backup and assistance. The deputy asked the driver to step out of the car but instead the suspect fled into the West Gate Mobile Home Park. The driver soon realized that road was a dead-end street.

The suspect turned his vehicle around to exit the park and struck the deputy’s vehicle causing damage to the brush guard.

The suspect exited the mobile home park making a right turn onto Airport Road in the direction of Walthourville with both deputies in pursuit. When the suspect reached the intersection of Barry McGaffrey Blvd and Airport Road the deputy who was called in to assist, managed to deploy the PIT maneuver causing the suspect to lose control of his vehicle and crash into the wood line.

The suspect was flown to Memorial Health University Medical Center by Helicopter.
